MAIN STREET PROGRAM
Welcome
to the official website for the City of Pharr’s Main Street City Self-Initiated
Program. The Main Street Office started
operations on June 2001 when Mr. Fabio Angell joined the City as downtownplanner.
In November 2001, the program was able to secure official sponsorship by the
Texas Historical Commission in Austin.
The major scope of the Main Street Program consists of fully developing
and implementing integrally each of the four plans below:
Downtown Plan to diversify and enhance Main Street’s economic base
and unique assets.
Preservation Plan to protect, preserve and enhance
the city’s historical fabric.
Urban Design Plan to improve the ‘Visual Relatedness’ of
the city’s downtown.
Neighborhood Plan to develop a critical mass of
households & foot traffic in downtown.
In November 2002, and for the second straight year, Pharr secured
the Texas Self-Initiated Main Street Designation from the Texas Historical
Commission. This one-year participation
in the Texas Main Street Program is by invitation-only. The city was bestowed
this honor because of its strong Main Street potential, according to THC’s
Interagency Council in Austin.
